Now, the longer your dog’s hair, the more often it will need grooming. The primary health benefit of this is parasite control. When your dog’s coat is well-groomed, it’s much easier to spot unwelcome critters like fleas.

As far as supplies go, you will need high-quality dog grooming clippers, a dog brush (one with fine, bent bristles that can easily tackle tangles), a sturdy metal dog comb, and organic dog shampoo.

First, you need to shampoo and dry your dog because a clean dog is much easier to groom. Next, with the comb and brush, comb out the areas that aren’t matted. If you find matted areas, remember that combing them out can be painful and work slowly. Start at the edge of the mat, using the teeth of the comb to pull the mat away from the skin. Then take your scissors and clip right under it. You may not get a desired look, but this is the best way to remove matted hair.

Then take the clippers, lay them flat against your dog’s body, starting at the back of the ears, and make long slow strokes following the natural growth of its hair. Do this around the entire body, and then the legs. Dogs hate the sound of clippers, so toss yours a treat now and then. For the face, use your scissors cautiously.

Finally, you may need to bathe the dog to remove all the loose hair. Then give your dog a treat and repeat the process regularly. That way, it will become easier for you both.
