One of the most retched things that occur on this earth is animal cruelty. For those who cannot fathom the reasons why someone would want to hurt an animal, this is indeed a troubling topic. The good news is that the more education a people gets on the subject, the better off the animals will be. In order to do this, one should become familiar with the types of cruelty and what actually constitutes abuse to not only domestic animals, but all animals.

Acts of omission or passive cruelty are forms of animal cruelty. This is not a form of physical cruelty, but rather it is a form of passive abuse and is perpetrated if the animal is left without water, food, shelter or adequate medical care. Most of these cruelty cases occur because the pet owners are poorly educated about how to properly care for their domestic animals. If left untreated and unnoticed, a pet can perish.

The opposite of passive cruelty is active cruelty to animals. This is when an individual deliberately and with intent causes physical harm to an animal. Those who display these acts of commission, as they may also be called, usually suffer from severe psychological issues. If a child displays this behavior at any time, then a parent should seek immediate help. These occurrences have been linked to sociopathic behavior and can become worse as the child reaches adult life. As well, this type of cruelty often happens in an abusive home. In a union between humans, often an abusive partner will abuse the family pet for revenge.

Animal cruelty is wrong and inhumane and individuals who love animals can help to stop the inhumanity if they take the time to become educated and informed. Animal cruelty cases abound, so it is obvious that stopping the violence will take some time and effort. However, if one is committed to helping, then perhaps one day all animals and humans will live peacefully together.

Some birds have a way of bringing out the worst in humanity. Perhaps it is an unconscious fear implanted by movies and literature. Take for example the Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Birds” and you get a sense of how ominous and even perhaps deadly some wild birds are to mankind. Look at what a flock of crows is called. It is called a murder. Certain birds have been associated with death and even as messengers of death. Perhaps it is just a bum rap but regardless, mankind has this fascination with anything avian.

To get an idea of the role that the birds in this world have played, you can turn to literature. Edgar Allen Poe’s tale of “The Raven” and its sinister cries of “nevermore” have long riveted audiences. Ravens and crows have definitely gotten their fair share of a bad rap. Even in the classic Disney tale of “Sleeping Beauty,” the evil villainess has a pet crow/raven that is her evil spy.

The wild bird definitely deserves some respect. It is just like other wild animal. You have to keep in mind that it is territorial, will defend itself and has to find a food source. And while crows/ravens have received some bad press thanks to authors and filmmakers, vultures and other carrion eating birds have repulsed mankind for eons. This bird species is a scavenger. Anytime you see vultures or buzzards circling in the air, you know that there is either something dying or something that has already died. Most people do not set up bird feeders to attract these types of birds. They want colorful birds, songbirds and delicate hummingbirds to grace their gardens and yards.

Perhaps it is time that people got over their fear of the birds that have gotten such a tough break in literature and movies. You do not have to worry about going outside and a murder of crows attacking you for no reason. The raven is not a symbol of death or a portent of bad things ahead. They are just two legged, winged wild animals that serve a specific function in the animal kingdom.

Have you given much thought to birds of prey? These are a species of birds that are incredible in their abilities. They have speed capabilities that are equal to that of some land animals. They have the ability to lift large prey. They are fantastic hunters that put the best human hunter to shame. When people compare themselves to animals, a bird of prey should be on the top of their list.

The birds of prey group covers quite a few different species. Even within the same family, there are many variations. Being a big bird is not actually a requirement. Falcons and hawks are actually quite small when compared to larger birds, such as the Bald Eagle. The Bald Eagle is a wild bird that is enormous. It has a length of 24-48 inches and has a wingspan of 72-96 inches. This bird can weigh anywhere from 6 pounds on up to 15 pounds. Add in its razor sharp beak and dangerous talons and it is one of the ultimate predators in the wild.

While the Eagle family has some of the largest birds, there are other groups that are predators as well. You have undoubtedly heard of people using falcons and hawks as game birds. This is not a reference to someone eating the birds but instead it is the birds that are used as hunting weapons. It is not easy to gentle a falcon or a hawk. These are wild birds that come equipped with razor sharp talons and beaks that can easily tear flesh. Gentling a hunting bird requires time and a lot of patience. They have to be trained to return to their coop or the hunter’s gloved arm.

Birds of prey are fascinating. If you consider how long they have been around and the abilities that they have, it is amazing that more people do not immediately consider this bird species as a viable contender for top animal. Their superior eyesight, ability to track minute movements and excellent hearing moves them to the top of the food chain in the animal kingdom. The only natural enemy of many of these birds is mankind. The more you learn about these birds, the greater respect you will have for their abilities. Hopefully, you will want to do everything you can to protect their habitats.

Have you ever heard the phrase that something was “for the birds?” It usually implies that something is crazy. Isn’t it funny how bird related things make their way into normal conversation? If you have a bird watching friend, then you undoubtedly have heard that person talk quite animatedly about the world of two legged, winged wild animals. Watching birds is a rewarding hobby for those who enjoy being outdoors and want to see what Mother Nature has to offer. In today’s economy it is a hobby that does not require a lot of money and is something that the whole family can enjoy.

If you are new to the whole bird watching lifestyle, then you are going to need some guidance and help. One of the best websites to visit is www.birdwatching.com. This website has everything that a newbie might need. It offers tips on how to bird watch, how to set up bird feeders to attract birds to your yard and even has a store where you can purchase the right equipment you might need.

A great way to get into watching birds is to go on birding tours. These tours can be local or they can be to some tropical destination where you will observe exotic birds, such as Toucans or Flamingos. Just the thrill of seeing wild birds in their own natural habitat can be a treat for anyone. It not only gets you outside in the sun but it also can serve as an excellent form of exercise. You can easily cover miles when you are absorbed in watching the skies or trees for the birds that you are seeking out. If you are not quite ready to spend a lot of money on a birding tour, then you can always borrow a book from your local library and discover the birds that live in your area. There are many books that can offer you tips and tricks to seeking out local birds.

As mentioned above, if you do not really care for bird watching out in the forest or on birding tours, you can always set up bird feeders in your own yard. The birds will come in to eat and if you have provided special housing for them, they may even nest. This gives you a chance to observe how the birds parent their young. Just remember that different birds require different types of enticement.

Birds are everywhere. For bird watchers this is a fabulous thing. Bird watchers enjoy spotting new bird species to cross off their checklist. It not only gives them something to research but it also gives them the opportunity to get outside and interact with nature. This is a hobby that is growing in popularity and it is doing tremendous good in educating the public about how easily mankind can wreck havoc on nature. As a bird watcher you have the opportunity to really see how mankind interacts with wild animals in a natural setting.

Birds range in size. Sometimes a bird is easy to spot based solely on the size. Take for example the ostrich. The ostrich is the largest bird in the species. You will not even need a set of birding binoculars to see this huge example. But on the opposite end of the spectrum are the hummingbirds, which range in size from a few inches in diameter to the size of a bumble bee. Even if the bird is sitting still, you would have trouble spotting it. When it is in flight and zipping around you only get a brief glimpse unless you have special hummingbird feeders set up in your yard to attract them.

If you are a real fan of birds, then you will undoubtedly take steps to attract them to your garden or yard. Even if you live in an apartment with a small patio or balcony you can still find bird feeders to lure certain species in. But you need to take into consideration the type of bird you want to attract. If you are hoping to attract a blue bird then you do not need a feeder that caters to swallows. The more that you put into researching the type of bird you want around your home, the more you will know about their particular eating habits. One further note: make sure that you buy bird feeders that squirrels cannot get into.

If you decide that you do not have the time to fully devote to a new hobby such as bird watching, then you can still appreciate birds for the beauty that they give the world. The next time you are strolling outside, just take a look around. Chances are pretty high that you will see a bird or two. They may not be the exotic ones found in zoos or the rainforest but at least you are getting a glimpse of a wild bird in its own habitat.

Taking care of birds at home is perhaps one of the most fulfilling ways to relax. That is why it is important to provide birds with the right bird feeding tools. There are many different types of bird feeders, each designed according to the types of birds that feed from it. The most common ones are the wood hopper feeders, the tube feeders, thistle feeders, platform feeders, ground feeders and the suet bird feeders.

Hopper feeders are basically the most ideal feeders you can buy. They are made from wood, thus making them an additional accent to your outdoor surroundings. These bird feeders houses are very convenient since you just simply open the top and pour the wild bird seed in. They are also fairly well protected against weather like snow or rain. Generally, wood feeders are practical. But be sure to place these feeders in strategic locations, otherwise, squirrels might raid them. Tube feeders are another type.

These can be easily mounted onto a pole, or can be hung wherever you like. Additionally, when looking for feeders that have very tiny holes, thistle feeders are the answers. These feeders are basically designed for gold, purple or house finches because the seeds of the thistles no not pour out easily onto the ground. Most thistle feeders for wild birds have fun designs and you can normally see birds hanging upside down while feeding themselves. Moreover, the design effectively keeps birds always from each other, thus avoiding competition for the seeds.

Other types are the platform feeders. Since these bird feeding tools are open in design, migratory birds can easily keep a close eye out for any predators that may approach them. What is good about these types of bird feeders is that larger birds can actually perch easily on the platform and simply pick away seeds that might catch their interest. And because the design is open, many birds can feed themselves all at the same time. If you like different types of birds all at the same time, then platform feeders are the answer. Ground feeders are also somewhat similar with the platform bird feeders but they are placed on the ground instead. Both the platform and the ground feeders, however, require proper maintenance often since there is nothing that protects them from elements, such as snow or rain.

To attract interesting types of birds, suet feeders are a good idea. This type of feeder is actually a cage made from wire and can be easily placed with commercially-prepared suet cakes. Suet feeders normally attract Northern Flickers, and also Pileated, Red Bellied, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers. You have a lot of options when it comes to choosing a feeder, so be sure to have the one that will attract the species you wish to see.

Most birds are very pretty, especially when you get to see them with your family right in your own backyard. That is why, providing for birds of varied species is very important. Choosing the right bird feeder starts by identifying the birds you wish to attract to your own mini nature reserve.

The first thing to do is to learn more about the varied types of feeders. In general, the various species of birds can use any one of the four varieties of feeders, which are the hopper bird feeders, tube feeders, tray feeders, and the suet bird feeders. The most common of them are the hopper feeders and typically they look like a gazebo or a barn. On the other hand, a tube feeder is cylindrical in shape and is designed with a number of perches, with tiny holes in the tube for feeding. Tray feeders, also called platform feeders or ground feeders, can provide you with an unobstructed view of birds since you can place these feeders close to the ground. These types of feeders generally have an open design. Suet feeders are made from wires and hold suet cakes. Aside from these four common types, there is also the Hummingbird feeder, which will attract this incredibly unique bird for your viewing pleasure.

Once you understood the major types of bird feeders, you can then decide which wild birds you want to attract. Generally, birds of different species may need different types of birdseed. For smaller birds, like Chickadees or Nuthatches, tube feeders are the most ideal. Platform or ground feeders are ideal for larger species. It is also important to consider providing your flighty friends with protection from predators, such as birds of prey and cats, or from food thieves, such as squirrels. For squirrel proof bird feeders, you can go for the tube or suet feeders, since these are the types of feeders that squirrels have a hard time raiding.

Birds of various species will eat almost any types of seed, in general, yet if you can, provide them with seeds of top quality. Also, keep the feeders clean and full to the top. Migratory birds will visit as they fly from north to south and back again, and your family will be richer for the experience.

House Training A Puppy

Your quest to learning to train a puppy needs you to be organized and take copious amounts of notes. If that sounds a little too simple, don’t glaze over and ignore it, as it’s a very useful record of what has worked, and look to teach your puppy new tricks as he gets older. These notes show exactly what works and how your puppy responds to various techniques, and what areas either need more attention or a different approach. No matter what you do in life – the fundamentals are the same. And house training a puppy is no different – spending time planning increases the odds of doing things right otherwise you’ll just be spinning your wheels – and getting nowhere.

Organizing your plan of attack is one of the first things you need to consider when you start thinking about house training a puppy, as it will help a great deal in moving your puppy from his familiar surroundings to the new and strange world you are providing for him. It can be disconcerting for a young pup when his mother and littermates suddenly disappear, and then is suddenly moved to strange and confusing habitat with a whole range of new and unknown faces and scents.

These emotions don’t just apply to young puppies. Fully grown dogs are not immune to bouts of anxiety caused by all the changes that seem to be taking place in their lives. You need to be constantly reassuring your dog when you move him to a new home; all he knows is that he is in a strange and somewhat frightening place.

If it is at all do-able, take a few trips to meet your pup while he’s still at his “old place”. Doing this will help break the ice between you both and help him get used to you. So, when you get round to, training your puppy the familiarity between you will result in a quicker learning experience. I appreciate this is not always possible so, try taking home something from the current owner that the puppy is familiar with – like a blanket or toy of some kind or anything that will help the dog adjust to his new surroundings and adjust to his new home.

Without doubt, the ideal time to bring home a new dog or puppy is any time when you’ll be able to spend a few full days at home with him. A holiday period is perfect. But you do need to be at home with your dog during the holidays. The more time you can spend with in these first few days the better. Spending lots of time with him when he moves in will pay dividends in building your relationshipand help the newcomer get over his homesickness blues.

Just as parents prepare for the arrival of a new baby by creating an environment to satisfy the baby’s needs and requirements, training a puppy needs to be given the attention to detail. Having a different number of legs shouldn’t mean you get less priority.

Section off a specific area for your new pup when he moves in. This will help him settle in, because this will make house training your puppy much easier as well because any accidents are easier to clean off hard floors. Kitchens are great places because we spend a lot of our time in these rooms, as this helps your puppy get accustomed to his new home.

Don’t forget that a young puppy is accustomed to the companionship of his littermates. Without them, he will be lonely so you will need to take their place at least for a few days. But equally important – you can’t let him get away with murder for a couple of days, then try to train him out of those habits once your training routine begins. Puppy potty training realistically starts the same day that he becomes a member of your family.

Your puppy will get mixed signals if he isn’t being taught the rules right away, for the simple reason that he needs consistency to fully understand what is expected of him. The processes we use in training a puppy work well for puppies and fully grown dogs too. Being homesick and lonely is not just a puppy issue. When you bring a new dog home he or she will need to learn the rules from the start. All dogs need discipline and affection in equal amounts. However, all your work will pay dividends in the future.

How often do you hear an owner shout, ‘Bad dog’ when what really needs to be said is ‘bad handler’. The feeling is very irritating when a dog jumps on you and puts paw prints over everything you’re wearing. When your front yard is the chosen venue for the next door dog to leave his many calling cards, this is also frustrating. The dogs are no worse than the children of the neighbor. What else other than bad behavior can you expect from animals and kids when the concerned adults have no idea what they are supposed to do? So lets concentrate on tips to train your dog.

The dog ought to be given pre-set behavioral limits when inside or when it is taken to public places. Sensible owners take the help of dog trainers who teaches them proper handling methods without breaking the natural spirit. Your vet office or local pet stores can put you in touch with trainers who hold group discussions with the owners along with their pet; or enroll in an online course to tackle any problems instantly.

A section of this training is involved with tutoring the owner how to handle his pet. There is a saying amongst trainers however that it is far easier to train dogs than the people that own them! Dogs need to practice when they are taught to walk with leash when they are taken out and for this they need to walk around in a yard or any other area. Owner and other residents get irritated when these animals bark even if it is a typical occurrence. When they bark, they are simply communicating with us; a reprimand him might give them the wrong signal and confuse them.

Image by Barbara L. Slavin via Flickr

So why does a dog bark? Well, just like a young child or baby, it needs attention, food or something to drink. The noise of a dog barking can alarm the owners of a burglar intrusion so attempting to stop him from doing this may work against you. It is wrong to encourage a puppy to bark and then punish him for barking when he attains adulthood.

Trainers teach you how to promote the dog behavior you prefer by praising your pet and giving them the occasional treat. How do you make your puppy stop the undesired behavior? Well, simply learn to reward him when he does something which is ‘desired’ behavior. Don’t waste your time trying to teach a dog some behavioral pattern which contradicts his natural breed. To make your pet follow specific behavioral training, you ought to choose one from a breed with can give you what you need. Dedication, patience and a loving attitude are needed if you wish to train a dog.
