If you have one of those old style fish tanks and are in the process of decorating your home, now is the ideal time for you upgrade your tank to something with a more contemporary design. There are lots of interesting new tanks shapes on the market. They come in the form of the traditional spherical tank, hexagonal shapes and a relatively new design is the aquarium with a fluval edge. This type of tank literally overhangs it’s base, which look very ergonomic. Having a fluval edge will make your aquarium look more attractive and take up a little less space.

If you are wanting something that looks even more impressive than your average aquarium, why not consider building a tank into one of the walls in your home? Having a transparent wall section, with lots of colorful fish swimming about in it is a really eye catching feature. The only difficulty in creating such an aquarium is making sure you have adequate access to the tank for maintenance. This could be as part of a cupboard in the wall above the tank. If you use the same color for the door panels as you do for the color of the wall it is set in then it would hardly be noticeable.

For the cheap and cheerful option though, go for a large spherical tank. These are very attractive to look at and offer full 360 degree viewing of your tank.

Fish kept in tanks can often become victims of diseases such as white spot. To prevent them from coming to harm it is a good idea to keep their living conditions clean and healthy. Clear and clean water is less susceptible to carrying diseases, but how do we keep it this way? One method is to have a pump installed as part of your fish tank which will circulate the water around keeping it from becoming stagnant.

Another method is to have fish tank filters installed in your tanks. Combined with the water circulating the tank, these will clear your tank water of waste and debris. They are quite inexpensive too so make a good addition to any fish tank. Although you may be thinking this is where your list of options stops, it isn’t. Surprisingly, you can also get live fish tank filters. What are these and where can you find them?

Live fish tank filters are shrimps, catfish, crabs and other bottom feeders. They survive by feeding on the waste that fish produce, the more fish you have, the happier they will be! Shrimps and catfish are perhaps the safest options to acquire as they are not very aggressive. A crab on the other hand, has large pincers which can cause some serious damage to fish. Shrimps will sit on the bottom of a tank sifting through the water all day long and require little care. The only thing to watch out for with them is when they shed their skin as they grow. This can be quite a shocking thing to see as it looks as though the shrimp has died when really it just outgrew its shell. Catfish are again, quite docile, but grow to huge sizes and live for many years. Perhaps a normal fish tank filter is the way to go after all!

Before you jump into the responsibility of starting a new aquarium system in your own home, you must first understand the ways how the nitrogen cycle applies and how you must attend to it. Most fish enthusiasts commit the mistake of not even considering to look into this, and over time, their pets pay the price. In new aquariums, there is the toxin called ammonia, which is deadly for most living organisms like fishes. This substances is annihilated by good bacteria being produced by fishes. But for new aquariums, it is obvious that problem begins how to remove the ammonia since there are still no fishes to kill it.

Nitrogen Cycle in Aquarium

Aquarium nitrogen cycle is simple enough to be understood by any prospect pet keepers. It begins with the production of ammonia, which is caused by various impurities in the water such as the excreted fish waste, the uneaten food particles, contaminations, etc. Then, fishes will release nitifying bacteria that will eat the ammonia and turn it to nitrite, which is a less poisonous substance. After that, the same bacteria will convert the nitrite into nitrate, a something that very tolerable and essentially harmless for the fishes. The nitrate will either be filtered, or dispatched through regular water changing.

You must first run the aquarium before you start putting your fishes inside. Wash all equipments with water. Avoid using detergents, because they could leave traces that might later on harm the fish. Use de-chlorinated water for your tank, and don’t forget to add up filters and lights. Observe cycle in tank until the water inside is no longer cloudy in appearance. Test the PH levels, make sure it is right. Continue checking it for at least a month after you’ve already added the fish.

Survival Rates of Fish

After all is set and polished, the last step is to finally get the live contents of your aquarium: fishes. If you are very new to the concept of fish keeping, don’t get too daring yet. Just go with fish types, like live bearers or barbs, that are easy to maintain and could survive harsh ammonia-filled environments. Another thing, you must also not get too hyped up and buy so many fishes. You can do with four to five at most for your first month, and then just buy additional ones as you go along. If you feel that you can handle them, of course.

Feeding Your Fishes

And now that your aquarium is complete, the very last things you must attend to are observation and maintenance. Feed you fishes only with the amount that they can surely finish. Overfeeding leads to more unfinished food waste, and by extension, to heightening of the ammonia levels. In addition, keep monitoring your aquariums measurements in terms of the PH level and temperature. Change water and clean on a regular basis. And finally, keep a good watch over your fishes to know whether they are healthy or sick.

The Koi have little fear with us humans, and this serves as one of their best features. Once your pets sees you as the one who feeds them and the one who’s not going to harm them, they are likely to eat right out of your hand (provided with the proper training). The reality is that koi nourishing can be one of the most entertaining and funniest experiences that you’re going to get into.

These pets, by nature, are non-aggressive ones. They don’t have teeth, so you don’t have to worry about getting bitten if ever you decide in attempting to feed them with the use of your hand. This activity will also attract smaller kids, as they will be delighted and entertained by the pets’s gentle nature and beautiful patterns and colors. Like any other wild animal, they will have that fear of you in the start.

Their instincts are the ones that tell them to fear you, which is what keeps them alive and survive in the wild in the first place. So, what you have to do is to build up trust with your pets, and this will take a certain amount of time and patience in your part. Remember that hand feeding can’t be achieved over night!

Your pets feed on both meat and plants, as they are an omnivorous species. Being omnivorous brings versatility in their diets. They will eat almost everything that you give them, not caring whether it’s good for them or not. Since they don’t have the ability to judge what’s good or bad for them, you, as the owner, should be the one to control their diet.

Overfeeding is another problem, as your pets might get overweight from eating foods that are not nutritious for them. The healthiest treats for your pets are the natural ones, such as tadpoles and earthworms. Also, you can feed them with bread, lettuce, veggies and fruit. Just be careful when feeding your pets with food such as beans, corn and grapes, as they have those outer casings. These outer casings will be harmful for your pets if these are not properly digested by them. So, just make sure that you remove the outer casings before feeding them.

Now, the trick here is to start slow in feeding your pets. Don’t make any sudden movements, as this will scare away even the most trusting of your pets. What you should do is start hand training your pets right from the moment you get them (which is also applicable for those that are in your current population). You can start by placing few of the snacks or pellets in your hand and then put your hand under the water.

Then slowly allow the food to fall from your hand. Now, it may seem that your pets may not seem to pay any attention, but the reality is that they are aware of your hand (and that your hand is the ones giving them food). You can do this within a period of two days.

Doing this will help you gain the interest of your pets. Then as you have now gotten their interest, let the pets remove the food from your hand. Now, if your pet will refuse to take food from your hand, don’t feed them on that day (you’re not going to stare them in this process). They will have the notion that they must get the food from your hand if they want to feed. If you do this everyday, this will make them comfortable with you.

So once you have the pets feeding out of your hand, you can then start in making them feed from your fingers. And the same thing applies here: if they’re not going to feed from your fingers, don’t feed them on that day. Remember that food will serve as your motivator when it comes to feeding wild animals, and guaranteed, no fish will simply stare itself just because it is not sure of the situation it’s in.

In koi feeding, you have successfully made your pets feed from your hand, you can then alternate the routine between the regular and hand feeding. There’s no reason in trying to take the time in hand feeding if you’re in such a hurry. And another important thing is that once you get your pets to feed from your hand, always be careful in allowing your visitors to feed your pets. Supervise them (both the kids and the adults) in feeding your pets properly; no sudden movements and give your pets the right foods for them.

There are so many to choose from this was pretty difficult to put together but here are my top 6 tropical fish types. These are all freshwater – I’ll address salt water another time…

Neon Tetra’s
The Neon Tetra has a light-blue back over a silver-white abdomen and is characterized by an iridescent blue horizontal stripe along both sides from its nose to the base of the adipose fin. It has a further iridescent red stripe that begins at the middle of the body and extends to the base of the caudal fin.

Most will develop an olive green sheen lining their backs. This fish is completely transparent except for these markings. During the night, while the fish is resting, the blue and red become silver and change back when it becomes active in the morning. It grows to approximately 3 cm (1.25 in) in overall length. They are best kept in shoals of four or more.

Red tailed Shark
Red-tailed black sharks have amazing colors and can quickly become the centerpiece of your aquarium. They are territorial and hostile but can be kept in community tanks with care. They are also quite intolerant of others in their or similar species. Having said that, many of the cyprinid sharks, including the Red-Tail, can be kept in groups if the aquarium is very large, there are many hiding places, and three or more individuals are introduced together.

Elephant Nosed fish
Teh elephant nosed fish is a dark brown to black in colour, with a rear dorsal fin and anal fin of the same length and a forked tail fin. It has two stripes on its lower pendicular and its most striking feature, as you might have guessed, is a trunk-like protrusion on it’s head. This is not it’s nose, but a sensitive extension of the mouth, that it uses for self-defense, communication, navigation, and finding worms and insects to eat. Should be fed on bloodworms.

Guppies
Guppies are just great and come in a variety of shapes and colors. While wild-type females tend to be grey in body colour, males have splashes, spots, or stripes that can be yellow, orange, blue, red, black, or even purple. Guppies are often bred for their natural color, so over the years the domestic guppy has grown weaker. As a result, guppies will sometimes die after 2-3 days after stress or pH shift. A guppy may not survive a sudden increase or drop in temperature.

Black Widow Tetra
This is an undemanding species which is great for first timers. A number of colour and long-finned varieties have been produced. They are generally peaceful community fish only occasionally nipping or being nipped.

Clown Loach
The Clown Loach has a long and laterally compressed body, with an arched dorsal and a flat ventral surface. Its head is relatively large and its mouth faces downward with fat, fleshy lips, and four pairs of barbels. Clown loaches can make a clicking sound when they are happy or angry. The body is whitish-orange to reddish-orange bands.

So thats it! My best 6 tropical fish types. Hope you enjoyed.

Too many pet goldfish are confined to small bowls, as it is a common misconception that these fish don’t need to be in a tank. The truth is, unless the owner is able to maintain daily water changes, the fish is very likely to die well before its time. Even if good filtration was possible in a small bowl, pet goldfish are a lot happier with room to swim freely.

Goldfish need a tank big enough to provide at least 7 gallons of water per fish. So if you wanted to keep 4 fish you would need an aquarium that holds at least 27 gallons. Overcrowding will threaten the health of your goldfish so it is worth paying the extra on a bigger tank.

When deciding which tank to buy for your goldfish the most important thing to consider is that it allows plenty of air to get into the water. Goldfish need well oxygenated water to stay healthy, so a long tank is much more suitable than a tall tank. A long tank allows more air to touch the surface and more oxygen to enter the water which is very important to the health of goldfish.

Also aim to keep the water temperature between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Special aquarium thermometers are very cheap to buy and will allow you to easily monitor the temperature. Maintaining the right water temperature will greatly help your goldfish to stay disease free.

You will need a good filtration system for the tank. You need to factor into account the size of the aquarium and one that will be easy to clean and maintain. If you are keeping fancy tail goldfish in the tank don’t choose a filter with a too strong current, as this type of fish will struggle to swim in fast moving water.

The main cause that a goldfish does not reach its live expectancy are overcrowding, overfeeding and bad water quality. To give your goldfish the best chance at a long and healthy life provide a good filter, complete regular water changes and don’t allow uneaten food and other waste to build up in the tank. Waste in the aquarium will cause the water to become toxic which often proves deadly for goldfish.

With very little work and maintenance you and your goldfish will feel the benefits for years to come. Keeping pet goldfish can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience, and doesn’t have to be short lived.

It is very important to know the basic rules of feeding koi.The next step is really important.Find the right time to feed your koi and choose the perfect food.

Fish diet

Ready and prepared foods for koi are available in the market nowadays. It is availabe in some miscellaneous species: you can choose between, pelleted or extruded, flakes, pondstick formulae. While these kinds of food are all right, other types of food can be given as a sort of treat just to break the monotonous regimen of feeding koi. It is also possible to choose between the following food: edges of orange, watermelon slices, cultured earthworm and prawns. This is an easy way to give the koi some change and make them feel good.

However, there are some foods that should not be given as food to the fishes. Foods like peas, sweet corn and potatoes should not be fed, as these foods are high in moisture and carbohydrates. Foods that are high in solid fats are also the ones to be avoided, especially meat and dairy products like cheese.

One important thing: Koi are born without stomachs. They digest their food through the long gut, and the more they are going to eat, the more time it will take for them to digest it. This is because of the humble water-temperature. The food will be eaten, and then it will be partly digested inside the digestive system, and then drop the unwanted loading in the biofilter.

Feeding Koi the right food and time

In feeding koi, you need to be dependent in the temperature. It is never a problem for koi keepers that are living in a tropical climate, as they can feed them all year round. When you are living in a northern climate, where it snows and gets cold in the autumn and winter, you need to know the preferred food in different seasons.

When the temperature rises to 50 degree Fahrenheit, it is recommended to feed the koi with easy-to-digest sinking pellet that are wheat germ based. With increased temperatur you can use more protein enriched food. When the temperature is shooting down, slip back to wheat germ based foods before cutting the food feeding for the hibernation period. This is when the koi’s metabolism slows down and the energy stored in them is going to be used all throughout winter.

A lot of people do not even care as to how much is the amount of food to be fed per day: the recommended amount is between one and two percent of the body each day. There are other people who apply the 5 minute rule: the process of which is to feed them at a certain amount and let them eat for five minutes, after five minutes, cut back the amount if there is leftovers.

Keeping fish is a well-liked hobby for a number of reasons, because fish are fun pets to keep and also exciting to learn about. There are many considerations that need to be made when it comes to setting upup your own fish keeping hobby, including selecting the tank aquarium, selecting the environment, choosing your fish and selecting the right accessories.

The initial step to setting up your aquarium is to decide what size aquarium you want to start with. There a quite a few tank aquariums to choose from but even as a beginner, larger is usually better. So while you may be able to begin with a 10 gallon aquarium, the smallest that is recommended is closer to 25 or 30 gallons.

Where are you going to put your aquarium? Ensure that you have adequatespace on a surface, or that you are prepared to buy an appropriate stand. If placing your aquarium on another piece of furniture, keep in mind that a single gallon of water weighs 8 lbs.

Most tank aquariums will already come with a basic light and a hood that will work on a general purpose basis unless you plan to grow a lot of aquatic plants. If your hood and light are not already running on a timer, it would be beneficial to purchase one when you buy your aquarium. Depending on the species of fish you keep, your aquarium lights should only operate for between 8 and 10 hours a day for the best results.

Your aquarium will also require a filter and a heater. There are a few choices to consider, and the choices that you make for these pieces of equipment should hinge on the type of environment you are looking to create. Each filter type, for example, has pros and cons associated with it.

Bio-Wheel filters are popular for small and medium sized aquariums. What you should think about when buying an aquarium filter is the gallons per hour flow that the filter has. Your GPH rating should be 2 times the size of the aquarium that you are purchasing for the best results.

Heaters are important if you need to keep the water above 78 degrees, which is vital for tropical species of fish.

Another important consideration to make is the substrate that you will use for your aquarium. If you are looking to create a tropical fish aquarium, then sand or gravel is usually ideal. Some species of fish tend to prefer one or the other, so make sure that the fish you are going to buy will work well with the substrate that you want to use.

Aquarium d?cor is completely up to you. Ask someone at your local pet store before you add anything that you didn’t purchase from the store. The d?cor you buy at a pet store is designed to be safe for your aquarium, but bringing home random shells, driftwood or other d?cor may cause problems with your aquarium.

Setting up your aquarium is the next step before you buy your fish. Set your tank up exactly how you like it, fill it with water, and apply the necessary water conditioners and treatments. Your aquarium should be allowed to run just as it is for at least 24 hours before you buy your fish, though longer is always preferred.

The last step is to add your fish. Choose community fish and always ask a professional before you mix different species, because even some community fish are aggressive towards other species. The rule of thumb is to stick to 1 inch of fish per gallon of water, based on the full grown length of each fish. Start with a small number of fish when your aquarium is still cycling to make sure that everything is working right before you add too many new bodies to your tank. After about a month you can begin to add more fish in, when you know that the water has properly cycled.

Aquarium Fish

Aquarium fish can be great and attractive for most people who love to keep fish at home. Even though there is no aquarium fish is maintenance free, but at least there are some fish that easier to keep than other fish.

The best and easiest aquarium fish that you can care for in your aquarium is those which are tougher in health and more forgiving of any mistakes, like the freshwater fish. These fish are ideal for the beginners who tend to make more mistakes in keeping fish. The freshwater fish are the Betta, the usual goldfish and the plecostomus.

Bettas

The Betta which is also popular as the Siamese fighting fish is probably one of the easiest aquarium fish to take care of as well as being one of the most attractive fish. He has a robust physical constitution and has been popular to live in small bowls successfully, unlike other fish. He also creates less waste than goldfish.

On the other hand, the betta is an aggressive fellow and often fights with other fish. He will muder another male Betta since he was breed to battle in fish fights. Female Bettas are more social with other tropical fish. They are drabber in color and have much shorter fins than the male bettas. They can eat the equal foods as the other tropical fish with a fussy desirability to bloodworms.

General Goldfish

Many hobbyists state that the usual goldfish and its close relation, the Comet Goldfish are the easiest aquarium fish to keep. These goldfish are much more social than the Bettas and they have sparkling colors. They don’t require particular diets and they can tolerate just about any ornament you desire to plop into the aquariums.

But not all goldfish are easy to take care of. You must know that the egg-shaped goldfish that have bubble eyes, swim slowly, no top fin or have long fins are not considered easy to take care of. They should not live in the same aquarium with usual or comet goldfish. It is since they swim so fast that the fan-tailed or egg-shaped goldfish will never be able to get their fair share of food.

The Plecostomus

The name “plecostomus” refers to a family of aquarium fish that has hundreds of kinds. Some of the plecostomus are harder to take care of than others. They are bottom feeders like catfish or Chinese Algae Eaters and require their own types of food.
But any plecostumus you may find in your local pet stores amongst other tropical fish should be easy to keep.

The plecostomus are fairly strong and tough if you compare them with other types of aquarium fish. You must be careful because they are quickly to overgrow in the aquarium they live in. It is commonly turn out unpredictably and there is still no cause that can explain that occurrence.

In order to keep your attractive fish alive and have their pleasant place to live, you must be aware of their foods and their habitats. You can have a book or search on the internet to seek the best thing for your fish. This is to sustain your aquatic hobby.

Keeping your Neon Tetra healthy is the most effective way to make sure that your pet enjoys a long life. There are many things that can cause disease in your pets. Stress, bacteria, parasites, chemicals, and poor water conditions can all cause disease in your Neon Tetra. The best way that you can ensure that your pets enjoy good health is to make sure that you do everything you can to prevent disease in your pets.

The first thing that you can do to make sure that your pets have the best living conditions is to make sure that all the mechanical equipment is properly functioning each and every way. Check the filter systems and make sure that they are running smoothly. Check to make sure that there is a proper water flow. If you notice anything unusual, take care of it right away. Poor water flow can cause the chemical balance in the water to be disturbed.

Make sure that you monitor your the water temperature. A fluctuation in the water temperature more than a few degrees can lead to serious health problems. If something is wrong with the temperature in your tank, make sure that you check the water heater.

Make sure that you are cleaning the tank on a regular basis. You need to make sure that you are doing at least a partial cleaning every week. A weekly vacuuming of the gravel in the bottom of the aquarium is usually enough to help keep the water clear. If necessary, make sure that you use an algae scraper in order to clean the site of the tank as well.

It is important that you observe your fish on a daily basis. It is very easy to watch your fish while you are feeding them. This will give you the opportunity to observe them at least twice a day.

It will help you to become familiar with their feeding habits, activity levels, and appearance.

By observing your fish daily, you will be able to notice right away if something is wrong. Quick diagnosis is the key to making sure you keep diseases from getting out of hand and spreading through your entire tank.

Agar worm is a highly contagious disease. It is caused by parasites that will imbed into the flesh of the host. The fish will rub against anything in the tank in order to try to scrape off the parasites.

Like fish lice, these parasites cause irritation and also some localized bleeding at the point where the parasite is attached. You will see a white worm protruding from this point. There is also a danger of a secondary bacterial infection that can occur.

Anchor Worm

The treatment for anchor worm includes removing the fish from the water and then taking the worm from the fish with tweezers. Be very careful not to rip the flesh off of the fish, and be careful not to break the parasite. This is very dangerous to the finish, and it can be very difficult because the fish are so small.

After removing the parasites, you will need to treat the aquarium with an antibiotic.
