Keeping tropical birds is an enjoyable pastime, but it is not something that is easy to do. Because tropical birds are from typically warm climates, they require that their specific living conditions are recreated. This provides them with a healthy environment they can live in and ensures that they stay stress free and happy. Many tropical birds also have strange and unique dietary requirements too. All these things make them a rather specialized pet to keep. Take a parrot for example, some types of parrot can live anywhere up to a hundred years old or more. This makes the idea of buying a tropical bird something that should be thought about carefully. When they outlive their owners, they aren’t so much a pet as a legacy passed down from generation to generation. Would your children really want a parrot in their own home?

If you are thinking about owning a tropical bird, there are varieties which don’t live for as long as parrots. Take lady gouldian finches for example. These smaller birds do live for a long time, but they won’t outlive their owner. In some ways, finches make an ideal bird to keep as a pet. They are small so do not need a huge amount of space and they are not as loud as other tropical bird species. When keeping finches as pets, like with most animals, you should do a lot of reading up about them before you decide to get one.

Gouldian finches make lovely pets as they are so colourful. They have a deep red head, a purple coloured breast area which fades into a yellow under-body. They also have bright green wings, truly stunning to look at. What’s more, as they become more accustomed to their owner, they have a tendency to be rather friendly if kept well. They will think nothing of walking across your shoulders or even trying to nibble at your ear!
