Look first at those closest to you and your pet. Neighbors may know the pet well, and be happy to take it into their home. Staying in the same area will help the dog make the change too. Family and friends may have developed a friendship with your pet that will make them willing to take the pet into their home. Going to the home of people they know will make your pet more comfortable too.

Your veterinarian may know of good homes looking for a new addition if friends and family cannot help. They will know of families that have recently lost a pet, and will be able to advise on the suitability of the home as well.
They will also be able to recommend reputable shelters that can take your pet in. Shelters are run by people who love animals too, and they work hard to find new homes for the animals in their care. Ask your veterinarian about good shelters in the area.

Speak with other pet owners who have used this method and ask about their experiences. Remember, when you place an advertisement online, you are exposing your personal information to the world and this can leave you vulnerable.

It takes a lot of patience and dedication to handle a pet with behavioral problems. Unfortunately, many people give up and abandon their problem pet, leaving it to fend for itself. An abandoned pet is open to abuse and starvation, not to mention diseases such as rabies. Abandoning a dog is not necessary – there are trainers and other professionals who can help. A professional trainer who specializes in behavior problems will be able to help you and your pet change both of your attitudes and behavior to improve the situation. Before you visit a trainer, check with your vet – allergies and illness can sometimes cause behavior changes that can easily be cured.
