Toilet Training Your Cat in Two Fast Steps
Posted by GuestW on Dec 25, 2008 in Cats • 1 commentAbout everybody who owned a house cat is aware how much of a tough job it is, to regularly take care of a litter box. And so many owners of indoor cats also know what an even more unnerving task it is if the kitty doesn’t use the litter box! Of course there are those among us who dream of more important things and do not care to settle for litter box cleaning. For these kitty owners, there is good news now. Yes, believe it or not, it is easy to train cats, to use a real toilet. When you are toilet training your kitty, you will teach it to move from using a litter box to using a toilet. In case this sounds too good to be true, moderate your imagination a bit with the realization that you still have to flush the toilet for your cat.
1. Relocating Your Cat’s Litter Box
In case your cat’s litter box is not already in the bathroom, you will need to place it there. The box should be near the toilet on the floor for several days. After a few days you will put your litter box up some inches making sure that it is sitting very stable. In case you have no furniture fitting this description, you can use books if they are stacked in a stable fashion. The goal is, to reach the point where the rim of the cat litter box and the toilet bowl are on the same level. After that you want to put a sturdy aluminum pan over the toilet bowl in a way that will support your cat without wobbling as you start the toilet training with your cat. You should put less than an inch of kitty litter across the bottom of the pan.
2. Making your Kitty feel Comfortable when using the new Toilet Seat
After you have taken away the litter box and have the cat using the pan only, you are ready to start with the last part of toilet training of your cat. You can begin the training by putting some holes in the bottom of one side of your aluminum pan. Yes, you will need to reduce the cat litter so that it doesn’t leave through the toilet. Plus, you should consider using flushable cat litter at this time. The holes should direct your cat to put its front paws on the toilet seat as it potties. After your cat has been doing this for several days, you should make holes on the other side of the pan so that the kitty will be standing entirely on the toilet seat. The tricky step of the toilet training is that after your cat has been doing this with success for a some time, you have to totally remove the pan. If you are a successful cat instructor, your cat will from now on use the toilet you are using, too!
A Last Word on Toilet Training your Cat
These 2 steps may last as long as two to three months time with a stubborn, senior cat. So be patient with your feline companion. Try to remember that water isn’t something cats are naturally comfortable with. Don’t give up if your kitty does not want to use the toilet a couple of times in a row. Just keep your pan in case your feline friend is against it or at some time down the road reverts to not using this toilet. Put the pan back on the toilet and the cat can re-learn to take the toilet again quite quickly. The benefits of toilet training your cat are many.
