Canine Symptoms
Prevention is better than cure! Early action or prevention measures like inoculations will reduce the risk of your pet getting a life-threatening disease. Some breeds are more prone to canine disease so know your dog well and understand potential issues so you can recognise canine symptoms.
Good diet, exercise and a safe environment will extend the life of your pet. However, despite your care and attention pets can become ill. It is essential that you recognise problems at an an early stage – it can make the difference between life and death. Here are some of the diseases that need early treatment:
RABIES
- Dilated pupils
- Drastic change in demeanor and behaviour
- Constant growling and / or barking
- Foaming at the mouth
CANINE DISTEMPER
- fever
- apathetic attitude
- loss of all appetite and thirst
- discharges from eyes and nose
- vomiting / diarrhea
- muscular twitches
- posterior paralysis or convulsions
CANINE VIRAL HEPATITIS
- very high temperature (102-103 degrees F)
- signs of distress or apathetic attitude
- complete loss of appetite
- intense thirst
- fiery redness of the mouth
- swelling
- minor injuries will in turn lead to profuse bleeding and bruising
If in doubt call your Vet.
Of course, not all illnesses are so dangerous for your pet. However the following warning signs should raise concerns:
- loss of appetite (or ravenous appetite without weight gain)
- frequent urination
- diarrhea / constipation
- vomiting
- discharges from eyes, nose, or mouth
- coughing or consistent respiratory difficulty
- trouble urinating or abnormal urine colour
- shivering, or fever
- unexplained weight loss
- problems walking or getting up
- changes in your dogs normal behaviour
