Chihuahua Rescue Dog
When you get a Chihuahua rescue dog there are a lot of things that you have to take into account before you can begin to make progress in training your new dog. Not only are the natural habits and behaviors of the Chihuahua naturally aggressive and difficult to deal with sometimes, but then you have the added strain of the abuse the dog has endured and that can really make things frustrating and complicated. For such little dogs the Chihuahua can be a very complicated animal and a very difficult pet to train.
The first thing you are going to have to expect from your Chihuahua is increased aggressive tendencies that can possibly include biting. For the first few months of your time with your little dog these traits will be strong and the only thing that is going to help get through them is love and patience for a very long time.
Probably the most difficult thing you will have to do with your new Chihuahua rescue dog is refrain from punishing the dog at any point. Punishment to a Chihuahua is confusing and could trigger a biting reaction. Since you are dealing with a previously traumatized dog the chances are pretty good that the biting reaction is already in full effect and you will need to counteract that with love and affection. It will not always be easy but it can be done.
A Chihuahua that has been abused may or may not come to you housebroken. Chances are even if it was housebroken it will rebel against everyone by doing whatever it wants wherever it wants and that is never a good thing. You will need to try the standard methods for housebreaking at first but remember that housebreaking a Chihuahua under normal circumstances can take months so patience and understanding is very important.
A normal Chihuahua will begin life feeling that it has to defend its own possessions and territory. While this will look terribly cute it is behavior that needs to be curbed immediately before it gets worse. In a Chihuahua rescue dog that instinct to violently protect itself and it’s possessions may be very strong so you are going to need to exercise a lot of patience and show the dog that it is loved and safe where it is. It will take time but more than likely you will have to deal with it.
If you need advice or help with your rescue dog you can always call your vet, as they will usually have some great advice for you on what you should do in various situations. If you know of a Chihuahua breeder in your area then see if they will offer you advice as well. You can never get too much good advice when raising a rescue dog.
