Koi Pond Construction: The Dos And The Dont’s

Posted by on May 12, 2009 in Pets1 comment

The first thing you need to understand is that Koi ponds are not just some holes in the ground where you can store and keep your pets. In order to make them work well and sustain your fish, take into consideration many things as you start planning for its construction. Follow the simple rules that will make sure you’re not going to end up with a costly hole filled with nothing but dead fish!

The first thing that you need to consider is to have a professional build your pond (that's unless you have the necessary knowledge in fish keeping, outdoor landscaping and also construction). You might think that constructing the pond yourself will help you save some cash, but the truth is this kind of notion could not take you further from the case!

If your pond is improperly built from the start, you're going to end up spending a great deal of money on fixing problems that will come up in the future. With an improper set-up of your pond, you won't be able to save your fish from illness!

Remember that a professional will always give your what you want. They may give their inputs when it comes to a decision making, but they will always do what you want them to do. They are completely blameless if ever your pond will fail due to factors such as location, size, etc. Beware of those extremely cheap quotes, as they may cut corners that can cause you problems later (these will come in differently, but there are no significant differences between them).

Understand that these ponds are by no means water troughs for animals or swimming pools, and that's why much care should be taken in planning and building your pond. It may cost you more money than building those common types of swimming pools, but the rewards you an have are really much greater! Make sure that you keep all of the kids and other pets out of your pond, as they can cause problems.

Children swimming in the pond will cause a chemical imbalance and major problems like leaks. As for pets, although it may be okay to have them around your pond, they may mess with the filtration system and even chase your fish around! That's why it's best to keep them away from the pond.

Remember that other issues may come up that may need your special attention, just like any other pets people have. You can do these things: take some extra time to clear up those algae infections; if you're going out for a vacation, make sure that somebody with the appropriate knowledge will maintain your pond to make it properly available when you return; and also, you can always visit your veterenarian.

Once the ponds are completely built, most of them are going to be permanent, which means you can't decide within 2 or 3 weeks that you want to have the construction of your outdoor pond in the frontyard rather than the backyard. Take the time you need to carefully plan each aspect of your pond, considering the size requirements and placement. Once the pond is built, you can only do a little to change it, and this is something that you have to always remember. Ensure that you have ample time to make it, as this can demand lots of work from you.

  1. I just sent this post to a bunch of my friends as I agree with
most of what you’re saying here and the way you’ve presented it
    is awesome.

I also blog from time to time on this stuff. In fact, here’s an
expert from my most recent blog post…

When it comes to pond size, the bigger is always better. Koi have a habit of growing rather fast, so you have to consider pond size at the same time you are considering how many Koi you are going to put it in.

    Keep up the good work,
