Pet Keeping

Have you thought about Pet Keeping? Most people have at some stage of their life! You can probably remember as a kid plaguing your parents: “Why are YOU against Pet Keeping?” “It’s not fair!” and so on. Perhaps the circumstances were not right or money was a factor.

Kids love keeping pets and now there is evidence that it is good for their development.  But a study suggests that children who are exposed to two or more cats and dogs in their first year of life have a reduced risk of allergy. The research also indicates it could lead to boys having a better lung function. The research, was carried out by scientists at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. The study looked at 473 children – 241 girls and 232 boys – some of whom had pets up to about seven-years-old.

Some of the reasons often quoted about keeping pets: “help you to relax if you are stressed”, “gets me out of the house to exercise my dog”, “they are great fun and entertaining”, “they are very loyal and make you feel loved”. There are many benefits!

Later in life, pensioners can enjoy the company of a pet and benefit from the exercise often associated with pets. They can be a great comfort when you are feeling low or you have nobody to talk to.

Some important do’s:

  • Take time deciding on which pet
  • Carefully consider what aspects of your life are going to change with the acquisition of this pet
  • Reflect upon whether you truly have the time, energy, situation and need for this animal.
  • Determine what provisions you will need to shelter, feed and care for the pet, including the costs of such responsibilities and possibly vet bills. Can you really afford a pet? Can you cope with canine disease?
  • Consider a range of animals
  • Throughly research the animals you are considering: behaviour, how big they grow, weekly costs, exercise
  • Carefully consider what is going to happen to this pet as it grows
