Posted by PetFan on Dec 10, 2011 in Pets • No commentsYou can keep pet rats as companions in your home. Just like any other pet, they too can help you empty your mind of stress. While others regard to rats as pests, they are actually good to keep as pets. Rats are not only cute but loyal especially if cared properly. They can be kept in their cage without even whining. Rats are not only quite species but they are also grooming and safe to keep. They do not bite, especially if taken proper care of. There are ways that you need to follow to properly take care of rats. You will learn in this article how to care for your rats properly.
A spacious and a well organized cage will make your pet rats happy. The lower level should be where they dump and this area should be easily detachable for easy cleaning. Space is very important because rats like to move around. You can design your own rat cage or even build it yourself if you wish to save some money. It can actually be a fun activity to do. Old cabinets can be converted to rat cages because you will only need to fix a few things to make it an effective one. Don’t forget to always feed your pet. Don’t let them die of hunger. Rats pretty much don’t have a very big appetite and their food is quite cheap so you don’t have to worry about spending a fortune in feeding them. Always maintain and change their water. Bacteria might build up in their drinking water which might cause diseases that will kill your pets.
If you can, try to get a partner for your rat. Having a pair or a group of pet rats should make your rats more happier. For some reason, they don’t like to live alone. You can take care of both male and female rats, especially if you want to breed them. Keeping just one gender is also fine if you don’t want to breed them. Male rats are more cute but tend to make the cage smelly because they tend to pee everywhere to mark their territory.
In general, it is not very hard to take care of pet rats. You don’t have to spend a fortune in feeding them. You have to be ready at all times because rats die fast; mostly they have a life span of two years, some even less. Just try to keep both male and female so they can breed and you’ll have lots of fun taking care of the whole family of cute rats.
