As an unfortunate as it may seem, the same diseases that strike humans often affect our pets. Just like the elderly, older dogs tire quicker. In addition to that, they have aches and pains due to arthritis and painful joints, could develop certain diseases such as cancer or heart issues.
Again, much like people, dogs will gain weight as they grow older. The best solution here is simply to avoid that from ever happening. Therefore, it is of the essence to keep a close eye on its weight. Being overweight can bring on a slew of problems, making mobility difficult, increase the risk of developing diabetes as well as heart disease.
With some simple lifestyle changes all this can be avoided. For one thing, choose foods that are prepared by manufacturers especially for older dogs. These are made with reduced calorie ingredients. If the path is already overweight, then switch to diet food.
Exercise is of the essence as well. You may notice that your pet is not as agile or energetic as in the past. That’s normal so don’t push things. Instead, take longer walks without going overboard. That means giving him some time to rest. When it comes to playing and having fun, hold back a bit.
As well, vitamin supplements are recommended. The more nutrients they get within reason, the better the free radicals are fought off. That means that one can put off disease. By following these simple lifestyle changes, a pet can live a better life and the longer one as well.
