To attract different species set up feeding stations with their favorite food. An example of a speciality bird feeder is a thistle bird feeder that holds the seeds that finches love. Spillage can be prevented by using tube feeders which also keep the seeds dry and mold free. Enjoy the sight of the birds feeding from your home by using a window feeder.

Speciality feeders can be bought to attract hummingbirds, goldfinches and woodpeckers. Find somewhere safe from predators and close to your bird house. Check the feeder regularly to make sure the food is dry and mold free. Clean up any spilled food around the feeder regularly to deter ants and wasps and other predators.

Birds benefit most from feeding during the winter but food can be scarce in other seasons too. You can help the birds by putting out food all year around which will help when shortages occur. Temporary food shortages that occur in the breeding season can affect the fledglings so you should provide suitable food at this time.

Provide pans of water or bird baths for a safe place for them to drink, preen and clean their feathers. Provide water at various levels as some birds will prefer water at ground level, others prefer water in containers above the ground. Shallow dishes of water can be placed in quiet spots for the birds to clean their feathers, preen and drink. The sounds of running water will be attractive to the birds. Attach a water dripper to your bird bath. It will attract the birds and also prevent mosquitoes breeding in the water.

Give the wild birds a sense of security by providing a natural looking environment. You can provide an attractive place for them by letting a small area of the garden grow wild.

Some birds have a way of bringing out the worst in humanity. Perhaps it is an unconscious fear implanted by movies and literature. Take for example the Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Birds” and you get a sense of how ominous and even perhaps deadly some wild birds are to mankind. Look at what a flock of crows is called. It is called a murder. Certain birds have been associated with death and even as messengers of death. Perhaps it is just a bum rap but regardless, mankind has this fascination with anything avian.

And while crows/ravens have received some bad press thanks to authors and filmmakers, vultures and other carrion eating birds have repulsed mankind for eons. This bird species is a scavenger. Anytime you see vultures or buzzards circling in the air, you know that there is either something dying or something that has already died. Most people do not set up bird feeders to attract these types of birds. They want colorful birds, songbirds and delicate hummingbirds to grace their gardens and yards.

Perhaps it is time that people got over their fear of the birds that have gotten such a tough break in literature and movies. You do not have to worry about going outside and a murder of crows attacking you for no reason. The raven is not a symbol of death or a portent of bad things ahead. They are just two legged, winged wild animals that serve a specific function in the animal kingdom.

Birds are everywhere. For bird watchers this is a fabulous thing. Bird watchers enjoy spotting new bird species to cross off their checklist.
