Parrots are not only clever but very good looking, they make great pets. Teach them to sing, beat box, or any sort of sound. They live a long time, sometimes up to 100 years. Thus, your friendship will be extremely long, even lifelong. Training these 3 types of parrots will yield the best results. If you are interested in any other type then please get our parrot training newsletter and know it all.

African Grey

These parrots are medium sized and are usually of a greyish colour. This is a grey parrot but you can see them with red heads and wings. This type of parrot speaks best. They will talk to you if you train them properly. However it can never be guaranteed that the Grey you choose will talk no matter what. Sometimes a Grey will never talk or show any signs of talking. Give them lots of attention to make friends or they will be likely to scream alot. Once bonded, the bird will be loyal and will love you more than you can think possible.

Conure

These parrots are small sized and have very big tails attached to their bodies. They come in many colours and are extremely intelligent. They are jokers, they will play all day. They are good for learning cool tricks and remembering them. Speaking parrots are cool but it takes traiing to get them to talk. The drawback is that they are best matched to owners who have lots of time to spend with them.

This is due to the fact that they need many hours of training every day to instill proper behavioir. These birds usually screech very much and make a lot of noise and racket but if they are given an early training then they can be made to control themselves so that the screeching does not become a problem.

Macaw

These parrots have been known to survive for about more than fifty years and knowing this you should be ready for a long relation with your bird. Get a big cage because this is a big parrot. Make sure you get this parrot a wide cage. If you want this parrot to be happy then you should let it out of its cage.

They have great beaks and bite stuff out. Give them lots of toys so they they dont attack your furniture and ruin it. Being such an intelligent bird you need to keep its mind active so get it some parrot toys.

Remember parrot training is important, never neglect your parrot or you could end up with parrot behaviour problems.

If you're considering a new feathered friend, there are a some things you might want to think about in terms of care. Of course, the specific care requirements will vary by age, species and variety. However, there are a couple of things that are true across the board when you get a pet bird. Here's how to obtain a pet that'll be an awesome companion and how to care for it with great success.

First off, make certain you are choosing a healthy bird that has been well cared for. Avoid buying an ill or badly treated animal unless you have some experience with the species and its health issues. Rehabbing a sick bird is no easy task. Instead, if you encounter a pet store or breeder that seems to have a lot of unhealthy animals, consider calling a local animal welfare organization for help.

Sick birds may appear fluffy or ruffled. They may seem unresponsive, withdrawn, tired, or tend to hide their heads under their wings. Birds shouldn't sneeze or have droppings on or around their feathers, and there should be no sign of discharge near the nostrils.

A bird that just sits at the bottom of its cage, instead of on the perch, is seriously ill. These are all big warning symptoms. Healthy birds will have bright eyes, clean feathers with a quality sheen, a healthy appetite and a lot of of energy.

The degree to which your bird has been handled will also be important, as a poorly socialized or badly treated bird will never be a good pet. Look for birds that are friendly and curious, not those that shy away from careful handling. Remember that you should let the pros show you how to handle and touch your bird, however - most require relatively gentle care.

Reputable stores and breeders are the best place to look for a healthy, happy pet bird. Stay away from chain pet stores or any place that looks like a bargain. Remember - you're buying a living animal, not a decoration.

Once you've found a bird you know you desire, you should take him or her to a vet who knows birds well in order to get that first checkup. You ought to be allowed to return a bird which is in poor health to any reliable pet store. It also helps your vet learn what your pet is like when he or she is in good health, and lets you build a relationship with them.

Your vet can tell you a lot about what to feed your new pet, how to care for him or her, what medical needs are likely and what training is appropriate. This could be different from what you heard at the store - trust the vet, as he or she has more training.

Your bird's new housing should be the largest you can manage in your home, but with bar spacing that your new pet can't fit through. It’s fine to try and find cheap bird cages, but don’t cut corners when it comes to your new pet. There are plenty of bird cages for sale at very reasonable prices.

The perch should be made of natural wood branches when possible, and out of safe woods. Remember to clean any branches brought in from outside. Also, quarantine your new pet from other birds before introducing them, to prevent the spread of any issues you may not be aware of. Follow the veterinarian recommended diet carefully, and do not try substituting cheap foods or different percentages, as this can make your bird sick.

Likewise, avoid cedar, pine, and walnut shell bedding, as they can be dangerous for your bird. Change bedding regularly, and remember to socialize with your bird on a daily basis. Big birds such as parrots will need quite a bit of socialization, so think carefully about the one you get.

Studies show that one of the most ideal pets for kids are birds, especially parrots. Parrots are incredibly bright and intelligent creatures which easily relate to and interact with humans, especially children. Parrots are smart birds, and they also make good pets for young kids just starting to learn the English language; often the parrot and the child will imitate sounds together.

If you want your kids to have a parrot, you need to do research first. After doing a complete research regarding different types of parrots, you should now be able to figure out which parrot is best for your children. You should learn how to take the proper care of these birds; your parrot up-keep will also be a good lesson for your children.

The lifespan of a parrot is more than half a century. It means that if you decide to have it as a pet, it will be a lifelong commitment not only for you but for your kids as well. Think hard about the species of pet you select; remember you will be responsible for its care for a very long time.

Of all the kinds of exotic pet birds out there, parrots are very popular because they have at least 18 different species. The places of origin and backgrounds of natural habitat are key factors that determine each of this species set of nature and behavior

If you are searching to buy a very smart parrot specie for you child, Choose the African Grey parrot because they have high mental intelligence and are really simple to train with the human vocabulary. Compared to other birds, they are quite intelligent and require some extra care and attention.

There are other parrot species available for you to choose from including Eclectus, Macaws, Cockatiels and Lorikeet. Each of this species requires special diet needs and training skills in order to live healthy and happy. A good pet for kids, is a budgie, parakeet, or cockatiel. These birds have a level of intelligence and an ability to interact with kids.

Train Your Parrot

It’s not as difficult to get started with parrot training as you might think. You can start by teaching your bird a few basics, and this is true whether your pet has been with you a few days or a few years. Many parrot behaviorists agree that one of the most important behaviors you can train your parrot is the step-up command. How the step-up command works is that your bird should step onto your hand without hesitation whenever you give it that particular command.

Image via Wikipedia

You may be wondering why this is the first thing you should train your bird to do. To start, removing your bird from a cage becomes much easier once it knows the step-up command. It also helps when trying to remove the bird from a shoulder – either your own or someone else’s. Some parrots will try to bite when being removed from a shoulder, but this is less of an issue with a bird that is well-trained to step up. And if you ever find your bird in a dangerous situation, the step-up command could literally be a life saver. You also want a parrot that knows how to cooperate with you, and the step-up command accomplishes that goal. As you can see, the step-up command is useful for several good reasons which is why many behaviorists suggest teaching it first.

Start Training Your Bird to Step Up

For many parrots, the step-up command is one of the easiest to learn, especially if you are working with a young bird. You slowly place your hand so that it is in front of your bird at around the height of its feet and in a normal speaking tone, give the command to “step up.” Remember that your bird doesn’t understand our language, so it will learn what these words mean over time. For now, you can gently push your finger against your bird’s lower stomach area to push it backwards just a little. As you give a gentle nudge, your bird should willingly step onto your finger. Be sure to enthusiastically praise your bird when he steps up correctly. You can then practice a few more times asking your bird to step-up from finger to finger.

Troubleshooting the Step-up Command

Sometimes a parrot will cling to the perch for dear life. What they are thinking as they do this is anyone’s guess, but here is what you can do. Continue holding your one hand in front of the bird as before, but with your other hand, you want to move behind the bird so that it looks like you are about to pick your bird up from behind. Most parrots don’t like to be picked up this way, and this action gives the bird a choice of either that or stepping up to your hand. Nine times out of ten, the parrot will choose to step up. When your bird steps up, be sure to let it know how wonderful it is for choosing to step onto your hand.

Practice Makes Perfect

To get the best results, continue to practice step-up with your parrot. It’s really best to practice every day at the beginning. Even after the bird has this command down, you should reinforce the behavior with occasional practice sessions throughout its life. If you do this, you’ll find your bird is easier to handle and it won’t be nearly as bad when the “terrible twos” hit. Best of luck to you and your bird as you explore further parrot training topics.
