If you’re considering some form of training program for your dog, you should be thinking only of your desired results, and not the actions you want to steer away from. So as you start each exercise with your dog, think clearly of how you want your dog to react, and picture it having already happened. Don’t spend any energy on thinking about the actions and behavior that you want to avoid.

Sometimes we fall into the habit of thinking mostly about what we don’t want. This is particularly relevant with regards to training dogs as well. We don’t want our dog to pee in the house, or start chewing slippers, or disobey our commands, or bark like maniacs when we have guests or visitors come to stay.

But think about it. Especially if you’re thinking of getting a new puppy in the home. By concentrating on what it is you want to achieve, you’ll have a clear destination in mind. I can’t think of a better way to get started with training your new dog.

Use Rewards

The most important aspect people have realized in house train puppy over the last few years is the trend away from concentrating on correcting bad behavior, or penalizing mistakes, to emphasizing rewards.

Rewarding a dog is a very effective training technique especially for potty training tricks. Perhaps the most important reason is that if you make a mistake using punishment, the upshot may be irreversible. Some dogs – not all, but it can happen – might respond with aggression to being overly punished. It’s always possible that he will withdraw completely and become very timid. They seem to lose their sense of adventure. Some may simply curl up and shy away all the time.

Many people also find that reward-based training feels better. It’s a great feeling to be the bearer of rewards and praise for a well behaved pet.

But the best news is that this approach to dog obedience training works extremely well. The main reason being that rewards of this nature help to stimulate and build acceptable behavior. When he learns that a particular behavior gets rewarded, your dog is more likely to exhibit that behavior again in the future. With regular practice of how to apply that simple rule, this technique will have your dog behaving like the perfect gentleman (or lady).
