Some birds have a way of bringing out the worst in humanity. Perhaps it is an unconscious fear implanted by movies and literature. Take for example the Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Birds” and you get a sense of how ominous and even perhaps deadly some wild birds are to mankind. Look at what a flock of crows is called. It is called a murder. Certain birds have been associated with death and even as messengers of death. Perhaps it is just a bum rap but regardless, mankind has this fascination with anything avian.

To get an idea of the role that the birds in this world have played, you can turn to literature. Edgar Allen Poe’s tale of “The Raven” and its sinister cries of “nevermore” have long riveted audiences. Ravens and crows have definitely gotten their fair share of a bad rap. Even in the classic Disney tale of “Sleeping Beauty,” the evil villainess has a pet crow/raven that is her evil spy.

The wild bird definitely deserves some respect. It is just like other wild animal. You have to keep in mind that it is territorial, will defend itself and has to find a food source. And while crows/ravens have received some bad press thanks to authors and filmmakers, vultures and other carrion eating birds have repulsed mankind for eons. This bird species is a scavenger. Anytime you see vultures or buzzards circling in the air, you know that there is either something dying or something that has already died. Most people do not set up bird feeders to attract these types of birds. They want colorful birds, songbirds and delicate hummingbirds to grace their gardens and yards.

Perhaps it is time that people got over their fear of the birds that have gotten such a tough break in literature and movies. You do not have to worry about going outside and a murder of crows attacking you for no reason. The raven is not a symbol of death or a portent of bad things ahead. They are just two legged, winged wild animals that serve a specific function in the animal kingdom.

Have you ever heard the phrase that something was “for the birds?” It usually implies that something is crazy. Isn’t it funny how bird related things make their way into normal conversation? If you have a bird watching friend, then you undoubtedly have heard that person talk quite animatedly about the world of two legged, winged wild animals. Watching birds is a rewarding hobby for those who enjoy being outdoors and want to see what Mother Nature has to offer. In today’s economy it is a hobby that does not require a lot of money and is something that the whole family can enjoy.

If you are new to the whole bird watching lifestyle, then you are going to need some guidance and help. One of the best websites to visit is www.birdwatching.com. This website has everything that a newbie might need. It offers tips on how to bird watch, how to set up bird feeders to attract birds to your yard and even has a store where you can purchase the right equipment you might need.

A great way to get into watching birds is to go on birding tours. These tours can be local or they can be to some tropical destination where you will observe exotic birds, such as Toucans or Flamingos. Just the thrill of seeing wild birds in their own natural habitat can be a treat for anyone. It not only gets you outside in the sun but it also can serve as an excellent form of exercise. You can easily cover miles when you are absorbed in watching the skies or trees for the birds that you are seeking out. If you are not quite ready to spend a lot of money on a birding tour, then you can always borrow a book from your local library and discover the birds that live in your area. There are many books that can offer you tips and tricks to seeking out local birds.

As mentioned above, if you do not really care for bird watching out in the forest or on birding tours, you can always set up bird feeders in your own yard. The birds will come in to eat and if you have provided special housing for them, they may even nest. This gives you a chance to observe how the birds parent their young. Just remember that different birds require different types of enticement.

Birds are everywhere. For bird watchers this is a fabulous thing. Bird watchers enjoy spotting new bird species to cross off their checklist. It not only gives them something to research but it also gives them the opportunity to get outside and interact with nature. This is a hobby that is growing in popularity and it is doing tremendous good in educating the public about how easily mankind can wreck havoc on nature. As a bird watcher you have the opportunity to really see how mankind interacts with wild animals in a natural setting.

Birds range in size. Sometimes a bird is easy to spot based solely on the size. Take for example the ostrich. The ostrich is the largest bird in the species. You will not even need a set of birding binoculars to see this huge example. But on the opposite end of the spectrum are the hummingbirds, which range in size from a few inches in diameter to the size of a bumble bee. Even if the bird is sitting still, you would have trouble spotting it. When it is in flight and zipping around you only get a brief glimpse unless you have special hummingbird feeders set up in your yard to attract them.

If you are a real fan of birds, then you will undoubtedly take steps to attract them to your garden or yard. Even if you live in an apartment with a small patio or balcony you can still find bird feeders to lure certain species in. But you need to take into consideration the type of bird you want to attract. If you are hoping to attract a blue bird then you do not need a feeder that caters to swallows. The more that you put into researching the type of bird you want around your home, the more you will know about their particular eating habits. One further note: make sure that you buy bird feeders that squirrels cannot get into.

If you decide that you do not have the time to fully devote to a new hobby such as bird watching, then you can still appreciate birds for the beauty that they give the world. The next time you are strolling outside, just take a look around. Chances are pretty high that you will see a bird or two. They may not be the exotic ones found in zoos or the rainforest but at least you are getting a glimpse of a wild bird in its own habitat.

wild animals

The name “bird’s eye” has been given to many companies and mapping mechanisms. Who could forget Bird’s Eye vegetables? There are many applications that want you to make the connection between the bird eye and high quality products or software that can show map details for miles. The bird’s eye is a remark that is often tossed around when someone is referring to a high vantage spot that allows them to see the lay of the land for several miles. How much do we owe these wild animals?

The bird eye is quite similar to the human eye. It has many of the same working parts. The basic structures of a bird’s eye are: eyelids, cornea, retina, anterior chamber, iris and lens. These are the same structures that a human’s eye has but there are differences in how each works. The most obvious difference is that birds have larger eyes in comparison to the rest of their body. The starling’s eye is 15% of its body. The human eye is 1%. Birds can see a greater area but often cannot move the eye itself.

The size of the eye depends on the bird species. Owls, for example, have huge eyes that allow them to take in more at once. For a wild bird that is important because it means that they can spot enemies and their prey much easier. Owls cannot move their eyes so they rotate their heads. How far do they rotate their heads? They rotate a whopping 200 degrees. Another difference to be found is the number of eyelids a bird has over humans. The human eye only has an upper and lower eyelid.

All species of birds have three eyelids. They have an upper, lower and a nictitating membrane that cleans and protects the eye. Another difference is in the positioning of the eyes. Humans and most wild animals, especially predators, have eyes that are not as centralized as a bird’s eye. A bird’s eye is on the front of the skull and they lack the ability to see very far to the sides. This is why birds turn their heads often.

The bird eye is a complex and fascinating organ. And while it may share many of the same structures and functions as a human eye, it is somewhat superior. Wild birds depend on their eyesight. If something were to happen to its eyes or even just to one of the eyes, it would have drastic and dire consequences, in terms of survival.

Taking care of birds at home is perhaps one of the most fulfilling ways to relax. That is why it is important to provide birds with the right bird feeding tools. There are many different types of bird feeders, each designed according to the types of birds that feed from it. The most common ones are the wood hopper feeders, the tube feeders, thistle feeders, platform feeders, ground feeders and the suet bird feeders.

Hopper feeders are basically the most ideal feeders you can buy. They are made from wood, thus making them an additional accent to your outdoor surroundings. These bird feeders houses are very convenient since you just simply open the top and pour the wild bird seed in. They are also fairly well protected against weather like snow or rain. Generally, wood feeders are practical. But be sure to place these feeders in strategic locations, otherwise, squirrels might raid them. Tube feeders are another type.

These can be easily mounted onto a pole, or can be hung wherever you like. Additionally, when looking for feeders that have very tiny holes, thistle feeders are the answers. These feeders are basically designed for gold, purple or house finches because the seeds of the thistles no not pour out easily onto the ground. Most thistle feeders for wild birds have fun designs and you can normally see birds hanging upside down while feeding themselves. Moreover, the design effectively keeps birds always from each other, thus avoiding competition for the seeds.

Other types are the platform feeders. Since these bird feeding tools are open in design, migratory birds can easily keep a close eye out for any predators that may approach them. What is good about these types of bird feeders is that larger birds can actually perch easily on the platform and simply pick away seeds that might catch their interest. And because the design is open, many birds can feed themselves all at the same time. If you like different types of birds all at the same time, then platform feeders are the answer. Ground feeders are also somewhat similar with the platform bird feeders but they are placed on the ground instead. Both the platform and the ground feeders, however, require proper maintenance often since there is nothing that protects them from elements, such as snow or rain.

To attract interesting types of birds, suet feeders are a good idea. This type of feeder is actually a cage made from wire and can be easily placed with commercially-prepared suet cakes. Suet feeders normally attract Northern Flickers, and also Pileated, Red Bellied, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers. You have a lot of options when it comes to choosing a feeder, so be sure to have the one that will attract the species you wish to see.

Most birds are very pretty, especially when you get to see them with your family right in your own backyard. That is why, providing for birds of varied species is very important. Choosing the right bird feeder starts by identifying the birds you wish to attract to your own mini nature reserve.

The first thing to do is to learn more about the varied types of feeders. In general, the various species of birds can use any one of the four varieties of feeders, which are the hopper bird feeders, tube feeders, tray feeders, and the suet bird feeders. The most common of them are the hopper feeders and typically they look like a gazebo or a barn. On the other hand, a tube feeder is cylindrical in shape and is designed with a number of perches, with tiny holes in the tube for feeding. Tray feeders, also called platform feeders or ground feeders, can provide you with an unobstructed view of birds since you can place these feeders close to the ground. These types of feeders generally have an open design. Suet feeders are made from wires and hold suet cakes. Aside from these four common types, there is also the Hummingbird feeder, which will attract this incredibly unique bird for your viewing pleasure.

Once you understood the major types of bird feeders, you can then decide which wild birds you want to attract. Generally, birds of different species may need different types of birdseed. For smaller birds, like Chickadees or Nuthatches, tube feeders are the most ideal. Platform or ground feeders are ideal for larger species. It is also important to consider providing your flighty friends with protection from predators, such as birds of prey and cats, or from food thieves, such as squirrels. For squirrel proof bird feeders, you can go for the tube or suet feeders, since these are the types of feeders that squirrels have a hard time raiding.

Birds of various species will eat almost any types of seed, in general, yet if you can, provide them with seeds of top quality. Also, keep the feeders clean and full to the top. Migratory birds will visit as they fly from north to south and back again, and your family will be richer for the experience.
